Research Assistant for Dr. Amy Earhart
During the summer of 2020, I served as a Research Assistant for Dr. Amy Earhart. Using Microsoft Excel, I assisted in developing datasets for a digital humanities manuscript, tracking demographic information about the editors and authors included in American literature anthologies. I also edited student work on an online digital humanities archive. Undergraduates had collected newspaper clippings and other accounts about the infamous Millican “Riot” in 1868, and their documentation needed to be standardized and verified. Although the event was published in papers from South America to Europe, and oral tradition has preserved rumors of a mass grave, the massacre has been largely forgotten by the local white community. Rather than trying to reconstruct and impose a single authoritative narrative, the website provides a collection of contemporary accounts and conflicting perspectives about the event.
Level 3 Master Tutor, TAMU Writing Center
As a CRLA-certified Writing Consultant, I serve as a dissertation, article, and thesis advisor. Through written, oral, and visual communication, I provide consultation on academic and non-academic writing for graduate and undergraduate students. Where past consultations were frequently face-to-face, they now occur over digital messaging and video chat. I started in the fall of 2019 and am currently progressing toward a Level 3 certification. I personally developed a short training seminar and presented it to the 50 members of the Writing Center staff. Titled “Empathy in Writing Consultation,” the interactive seminar outlined the stages of the empathy cycle and tips for connecting throughout the process. Participants commented that my integration of multimedia made the seminar particularly relatable and memorable.
